On 10 October, Cabinet approved a Staffordshire County Council scheme for homes in Tamworth to be provided for young people leaving care.

In partnership with Staffordshire County Council and House Project, Tamworth Borough Council is working to provide suitable home options to those young people whose care placements are due to end.

The House Project is a charitable organisation nationwide, that partners with local authorities across the region to work with young people.

The ground-breaking project sees special support for those young people to help them live independently as they move out of care. The service is specifically for care leavers, aged between 17 and 18 years old.

Tamworth Borough Council are providing one-bedroom homes for up to five young people a year. The homes are throughout the borough. The project will provide intensive wrap-around support to young people, supporting them to sustain tenancies and create a foundation on which to build their adult lives.

Care leavers are selected in line with their care plan and will live independently and receive the full support of from the project.

Councillor Ben Clarke, portfolio holder for housing, homelessness and planning, said: “We’re delighted to provide homes for young people as they move out of the care system. Learning to live independently is difficult at any age, which is why this project is so important.

“The project in Tamworth is part of the new House Project in partnership with the county council’s ‘Homes for Children in our Care 2023- 2026’ strategy. The project uses a framework to develop skills, knowledge and confidence of care leavers, to grow within their community, make their first home, and have a positive future.

“Supporting and creating better opportunities for our young care leavers, is vital to building strong and positive relationships with our young residents.

“Housing stock provision of good quality and affordable housing in Tamworth, is a key priority for Tamworth Borough Council’s corporate plan.”
