An historic Tamworth charity fund which was set up to help improve the lives of local residents, is inviting individuals and organisations to apply for a share of this year’s £6,500 pot.

Tamworth Municipal Charities has been administered by Tamworth Borough Council since 1868 when it was established by philanthropists who wanted to help relieve financial hardship for local people at a time when state assistance was non-existent.

Over the years it has provided financial aid to those in need, typically awarding grants of between £100 and £500. Originally this took the form of cash handouts, but has also included the provision of washing machines, cookers, disabled aids, help towards the cost of visiting relatives in hospital, or respite care.

The funds are created from the authority’s returns on investments, and the board of trustees consider requests for help from people in need who live in Tamworth, or from organisations which offer help and support to those in need.

Over the years the fund has helped individual residents and organisations such Dementia Caring, Choices, Make Lunch Stonydelph, 1st Wilnecote Guide Unit, Belgrave Community Allotment & Garden, Coton Centre, Coton Green Church and local individuals.

Anica Goodwin, executive director for corporate services at Tamworth Borough Council, and secretary of Tamworth Municipal Charities, said: "This charity fund is a valuable legacy from our town’s history, continuing to support hundreds of individuals and organisations year after year. Though the fund may be modest, its impact is profound in helping those in need in ways that can truly make a difference. Now, more than ever, considering ongoing financial pressures and the cost-of-living crisis, the fund remains a vital resource for our community.

"We know that many residents are facing difficult circumstances, and this fund can provide a lifeline, whether it’s covering unexpected costs, assisting with respite care, or helping to replace essential items like white goods. I strongly encourage any individual who needs support to apply.

"We also have a thriving voluntary sector in Tamworth, and we welcome applications from local charities and community organisations seeking funding to continue their important work in improving lives across our town."

The closing date for applications is 15 June 2026. The charity trustees will then meet to consider how grants will be allocated.

All applications can be made via: Tamworth Municipal Trust Fund | Tamworth Borough Council.

Applications from organisations should include a copy of the latest statement of accounts.
