Businesses invited to make Tamworth town centre shine with Festive Windows competition

postcard advertising festive windows competitionBusinesses have started signing up to a new Festive Windows competition which is designed to bring some much-needed additional Christmas cheer to Tamworth town centre this year.

Tamworth Borough Council’s Arts and Events team are calling on all town centre businesses and shops to join in the festive spirit and go all out in decorating their shop windows as part of our competition.

The aim is for the town centre to shine and sparkle in all the colours of Christmas, giving families, residents and visitors from surrounding areas more reasons to shop local this yuletide season.

While news of the second national lockdown has delayed these plans slightly, businesses are still being urged to take part and help make December in Tamworth as bright and cheerful as possible.

A number of businesses throughout the town centre and beyond have already registered.

Among the first to sign up is Mhaire Dinky, owner and tattoo artist at Fallen from Grace tattoo and piercing studio in Lower Gungate, who has already started work on her window entry.

Mhaire said: “When I saw the post about the Christmas window display I thought it was such a lovely idea to add a bit of happiness and cheer in these crazy times and I think it's important to not only give the shop owners something to get excited about, but also to give our high street a colourful and happy feel.

“We’ve made a start on our window and have much more to add in the coming weeks.”

Also signed up is Joy’s Boutique in Church Street. This new family-run business owned by Lyssa and Adrian Haughton opened this year selling children’s clothing.

Adrian said: “My wife Lyssa is always enthusiastic about window displays which are eye-catching and it will be lovely to have some Christmas cheer and fun in the town after the year we’ve all had. Let’s end 2020 on a high!”

Businesses can sign up at www.visittamworth.co.uk/festive-window-competition and displays should be revealed and lights switched on by December 4 if possible to make the most of the remaining shopping weekends before Christmas. The list of businesses currently registered to participate is also available via the above link.

This launch will also tie in with free parking in council run car parks and Ankerside Shopping Centre on Saturday, December 5 (which is also Small Business Saturday) and Saturday, December 19.

The festive campaign will be hosted on our Visit Tamworth website and social media channels and shared across local media platforms, with photos of shop displays.

Members of the public will be asked to vote for their favourite display via social media and judges (including the Mayor of Tamworth, the Tamworth Herald and a Radio Tamworth DJ), will walk around town towards the end of December (planned for December 18) to choose their favourite.

As well as the honour of being the best, winners will get additional free publicity on Visit Tamworth pages.

Mayor of Tamworth, Rosemary Claymore, said: “We know Christmas isn’t going to be the same this year and a lot of the usual festivities and much-loved events won’t be taking place, but we still want to make the town as festive and inviting as possible.

“While the lockdown is due to end on December 2, it’s likely that local restrictions will continue to apply after this date and we’ll still be limited in what we can do. For that reason, the Festive Windows competition is an ideal way to give us some much-needed cheer and help support our small town centre businesses by giving people more reason to shop local.

“I really hope lots of businesses get involved and make Tamworth town centre the place to shop safely this Christmas. Postcards have been delivered to all town centre shops and the response has been positive so far with a number signing up already. Ankerside Shopping Centre has also pledged its support and we’ve even had businesses elsewhere in Tamworth telling us they will be decorating their windows too.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what designs businesses come up with. There’s no set brief. Just the brighter the better.”
