Councillor grants to support community groups during the pandemic recovery phase

Voluntary groups that have supported the community through the coronavirus pandemic, are invited to apply for a new councillor grant scheme to help with additional funding during the COVID-19 recovery phase.

Tamworth communities have come together to support the most vulnerable in the borough by partnership working throughout the current crisis.

Each ward councillor is being allocated £300, with a maximum of £900 available to spend in each of the ten wards in the borough, to support the continued work of these amazing groups.

Groups across the town are now being invited to apply for a share of these funds, with the help and support of their local ward councillors.

During recent years, councillors have distributed funds through the Festive Grants Scheme (a one-off £100 grant given to local groups to promote a community festive event or purchase), but this year an additional grant of £200 per councillor, will be given to share with groups during the pandemic recovery phase.

The additional funding is from the Office of Police Fire and Crime Commissioner’s Locality Deal Fund 2020/2021 and will be awarded to groups and organisations who have offered a range of support to vulnerable residents.

This includes groups who:

  • Deliver meals for those facing hardship as a result of the crisis
  • Help overcome isolation for those who have been shielding
  • Deliver projects providing practical support to vulnerable residents directly affected
  • Purchase equipment to enable community and voluntary groups to work remotely or to conduct socially distanced activities
  • Provide a festive, or other seasonal activity to combat loneliness.

Tamworth Borough Council is encouraging voluntary and community groups across the town to discuss proposals with one of their ward councillors, who will help complete and submit the application form.

An application form can be found here: www.tamworth.gov.uk/sites/default/files/councillors_docs/Councillor-Community-Grant-Form.pdf

Please complete the form and return to one of your ward councillors, so that they can submit applications by 31 January 2021. You can find out who your councillors are on our website: www.tamworth.gov.uk/councillors .

All projects and activities need to take place before March 31, 2021 and all successful applicants will be required to complete an evaluation form which must then be returned no later than April 1, 2021

Cllr John Chesworth, Tamworth Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Culture and Operational Services, said: “The coronavirus pandemic has been a very challenging time for everyone, especially for the most vulnerable in our community. It has been amazing to see so many people join together to help others during lockdown and continue to provide support as we enter the COVID-19 recovery period.

“We want to help as many of these groups and organisations as possible support residents and people who are isolated. As we approach Christmas, it can be a very lonely time for many and this year will be no exception.

“If your organisation or group is looking to hold a COVID-19 secure community event, launch a new scheme, reach out to the community or is short of funding to support home deliveries, then please contact your local borough councillors as soon as possible.

“Please get your applications in quickly so we can continue to help residents of all ages.”
