Appeal Against Your Hygiene Rating

Food businesses have a right to appeal food hygiene ratings given following inspection if they do not agree that the rating reflects management controls and standards found at the time of the inspection.  Before making an appeal, business owners or managers should contact  the food safety officer named in the letter or post-inspection report first to understand why the rating was given. If the business owner or manager still thinks that the rating is unfair or wrong, they can appeal in writing.  You have 21 days including weekends and bank holidays from the date you received your inspection report to lodge an appeal

Use the following form located on the Food Standards Agency Website: https://www.food.gov.uk/sites/default/files/media/document/fhrs-appeal-form.docx

Rescoring Revisits

An establishment with a rating of 5 has the highest rating possible. If you are rated 4,3,2,1,or 0 and have made improvements to your business, you can pay for a visit to be carried out before your next planned inspection.

These non-statutory rescoring visits:

  • are subject to a charge of £175 which must be paid before a visit is made
  • will be unannounced and carried out within 12 weeks of receipt/ or clearance of payment.

You can request and pay for as many visits as necessary but your re-rating will only be successful if you have taken action to make improvements in the business. Areas for improvement are detailed in the last report of inspection or letter. You can contact the officer to seek further clarification  by telephone. It is important to note that the new rating could also go down if improvements have not been made or if other contraventions are noted at the time of the visit.

To request a visit you will need to:-

  1. Complete and submit a food hygiene rating rescoring revisit request form together with any supporting information e.g. photographs of the work you have done.
  2. Make a payment of £175 online (please contact us to discuss alternative payment methods).

Send a food business right to reply

The right to reply allows the business to tell customers how the business has improved its hygiene standards or if there were unusual circumstances at the time of inspection. This response will be published online, alongside the rating, by the local authority. No fee is payable.
