Today is the Day of the National Flag in Ukraine

Ukraine-flagToday is the Day of the National Flag in Ukraine.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has displaced millions of families, forcing them to leave their lives at home and resettle in foreign countries across the world. As a local authority and a government body we have welcomed those affected by this crisis and helped them to relocate in Tamworth, through the help of Tamworth Humanitarian .

Today we were honoured to welcome one of the families to help us fly the Ukraine's flag atop Tamworth Castle.
Founder and trustee of the Tamworth Humanitarian, Councillor Maycock was also in attendance and had the following to say;
“I am truly humbled and honoured to have been asked to hoist the Ukrainian Flag on Tamworth Castle to mark both the Ukrainian Nations Flag Day, and then tomorrow, the anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence. It is so important to remember that on 24th August 1991 Ukraine gained independence from the then Soviet Union, becoming their own independent country.

"Tomorrow’s anniversary will be a very poignant one as it also marks 6 months from the start of the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine from Russia. So, as well as celebrating a Sovereign Nations Day of Independence we also remember all those Ukrainians who are again fighting heroically for their independence.

"Here in Tamworth, we have welcomed Ukrainians to settle in safety, through the homes for Ukraine and the Families for Ukraine Schemes.
Speaking with those families who have chosen Tamworth to be their temporary home, I understand that they have been made to feel welcome by all in Tamworth and they continue to feel the same while they are here.

"The Flag will remain flying throughout their National Flag Day and Day of Independence to show, that we here in Tamworth welcome them and hope for a speedy end to the war in their beautiful nation.”
