The Dog Friendly Tamworth Guidance – Business Owners

By joining the Dog Friendly Tamworth scheme, Tamworth Borough Council asks that participating businesses commit to the following guidelines, expectations and responsibilities:

1. Safe & Welcoming Environment

  • Provide a dog-friendly atmosphere that is inclusive and respectful to all visitors.
  • Consider providing a water bowl and ensure it is regularly topped up with fresh water. If placed outside, bring it indoors overnight.
  • Do not give food to a dog without the owner’s prior permission, as dogs may have specific diets or allergies.
  • You retain the right to ask any owner to leave if their dog is not under control or is disruptive. Participation in the scheme does not grant automatic entry to all dog owners.

2. Hygiene & Compliance

  • Adhere to all relevant health, safety, and hygiene regulations.
  • Restrict dogs from food preparation areas.
  • Maintain cleanliness in areas where dogs are permitted.
  • Be prepared to manage accidents appropriately should they occur.

3. Clear Guidance

  • Display the Dog Friendly Tamworth sticker prominently to show you are a part of the scheme. You will also be featured on our webpage as a dog-friendly business.
  • Clearly communicate any specific rules (e.g. designated dog-friendly areas).

4. Risk Management

  • Take reasonable steps to minimise risks to customers, staff, and dogs.
  • Address any aggressive or disruptive behaviour promptly.
  • Ensure that any potentially hazardous items (e.g. open food, sharp objects) are kept out of reach of dogs.

5. Positive Participation

  • Provide feedback to help improve and develop the programme.
  • Share your photos on social media using Facebook (@TamworthBoroughCouncil) or Instagram (@visittamworthuk). We will be able to reshare and engage with your posts to help promote your business.

Purpose: To create a welcoming, dog-friendly town by removing barriers for dog owners, encouraging visits, and stronger connections between the community and local businesses. Participating businesses reserve the right to refuse entry or withdraw from the scheme at any time. If you choose to withdraw, please inform us at business@tamworth.gov.uk so your business can be removed from all communications.
