- Tamworth Borough Council working with specialist contractor GOOM Electrical to carry out vital home electrical tests
- Checks complete by end March 2025, carried out by qualified electricians
- Working to keep council homes safe
Tamworth Borough Council has started work to carry vital electrical safety checks on 1919 council properties, with all expected to be complete by 31 March 2025.
Delivered in partnership with specialist electrical contractor GOOM Electrical Limited this project will cost around £750,000 and sees more than 16 homes checked by qualified electricians every day.
Electrical checks on tenants’ homes are due every five years and are vital to make sure home electricals are safe as half of domestic fires start because of electrics or electrical items.
For tenants, this is a free check, and involves a full check of the building wiring and repairs for any issues found.
This is part of the council’s standard work to make sure homes remain safe and secure for all tenants, and compliant with rigorous health and safety laws.
Tenants in homes which are now due the electrical checks are being contacted to make a suitable appointment. It’s vital that people book an appointment straight away when they get their letter to make sure their home remains safe. This check significantly reduces the risk of fire from faulty wiring in the home.
Councillor Ben Clarke, Portfolio Holder for Housing, Homelessness and Planning, said: “These electrical safety checks are vital to help keep the homes of our tenants safe, and form an essential part of our ongoing work to maintain council homes to a high standard.
“Faulty electrics (appliances, wiring and overloaded sockets) cause around 4,000 fires in the home across the country every year, so making sure the wiring in our council housing is a priority.
“We want every resident to feel safe and secure in their homes, and this programme supports this.”
Tamworth Borough Council has a regular programme of safety checks, improvements and upgrades including a standard programme of kitchen, bathroom and window improvements. Plus a 24/7 repairs hotline service so that all home repairs can be dealt with as soon as possible.
To report a repair, call 0800 183 0044. This number is staffed 24/7 and should also be used to report an out of hours repair in an emergency. Please note calls might be charged from a mobile. Or email the team at repairs@tamworth.gov.uk.
Tenants can monitor the status of the repair and review the repair history of their property in their MyHousing account.
