- Council continue to work with GOOM Electrical
- Electrical safety checks are free for council tenants, carried out every 5 years
- Tenants will be contacted to arrange an appointment
Tamworth Borough Council is continuing the rollout of vital electrical safety checks on council properties, as part of its ongoing commitment to keeping council tenants and their homes safe.
Delivered in partnership with specialist electrical contractor GOOM Electrical Limited, the next round of checks is now underway. With the work carried out by qualified electricians.
Electrical safety checks on tenants’ homes are due every five years and are an important part of making sure home electrics remain safe. Around half of domestic fires are caused by electrical faults or electrical items, making regular checks an essential part of reducing the risk of fire in the home.
The checks are free for council tenants and involve a full inspection of the electrical installation in the property, including building wiring, sockets and electrical units. Where any issues are identified, appropriate repairs will be carried out or arranged.
This work forms part of Tamworth Borough Council’s standard programme of safety checks, improvements and upgrades, helping to make sure council homes remain safe and secure for all tenants and comply with rigorous health and safety requirements.
Tenants due for their next home electrical safety check, will be contacted directly to arrange a suitable appointment.
It is important that tenants respond to the appointment request and allow the check to take place. The inspection helps identify potential electrical problems and significantly reduces the risk of fire caused by faulty wiring or other electrical issues in the home.
The previous five-year programme saw electrical safety checks carried out across 1,919 council properties, with the work completed by the end of March 2025. The council is now continuing the programme, with properties being checked as they become due for their next five-year inspection.
Councillor Ben Clarke, portfolio holder for housing, homelessness and planning, said: “These electrical safety checks are vital to help keep the homes of our tenant’s safe and form an essential part of our ongoing work to maintain council homes to a high standard.
“We are continuing to work with GOOM Electrical to carry out these important checks, which allow us to identify electrical issues and make sure the electrical installations in our council homes remain safe.
“When tenants are contacted to arrange an appointment, I would encourage them to respond as soon as possible and make sure access can be provided. These checks are free and play an important role in reducing the risk of electrical fires and helping residents to feel safe and secure in their homes.”
Tamworth Borough Council has a regular programme of safety checks, improvements and upgrades across its housing stock, including a standard programme of kitchen, bathroom and window improvements.
The council also provides a 24/7 repairs hotline so that home repairs can be dealt with as soon as possible.
