Tamworth residents, businesses and organisations are being invited to help shape the future of local government in the area.

Tamworth Borough Council, along with five councils from across Southern and Mid Staffordshire are asking communities for their views on how vital local services should be delivered in the future.

A survey was launched on Friday 25 July 2025 to gather this feedback, and there are now local drop-in sessions planned for residents to come and share their views in person.

The drop in sessions are:

  • Thursday 21 August - Sacred Heart Church, Silver Link Rd, Tamworth B77 2EA at 11am-2pm
  • Saturday 23 August - Ankerside Shopping Centre, George St, Tamworth B79 7LG at 10am-3pm
  • Thursday 28 August - Glascote Library, 80 Caledonian, Tamworth B77 2ED at 9am-1pm

Leaders from six councils have been working together as part of plans for Local Government Reorganisation (LGR). LGR is taking place across the country and will see unitary councils created that will cover everything from household waste collections and fixing roads, to street cleaning and looking after elderly and vulnerable people.

The move would see Cannock Chase District Council, East Staffordshire Borough Council, Lichfield District Council, South Staffordshire District Council, Stafford Borough Council and Tamworth Borough Council all abolished in 2028.

Now the Leaders want to hear from people across all their communities to help shape the future of local government in the area.

Carol Dean, Leader of Tamworth Borough council said:

“We’re facing the biggest change in local government services in over 50 years. The central government reorganisation programme will see district and borough council’s along with county council’ abolished and replaced with one new council which delivers all the services to the residents in that area.

“We’re seeking your views on what is important to local communities to inform the decisions around what that new council will look like and the area it will cover. What is clear is that government have the expectation that the new council will support a bigger community than each borough council does now, so Tamworth will become part of a new council.

“This is a government programme, and one we’re working to deliver in the best way for the people and communities in Tamworth. Yes it is happening, but local communities can help to shape the future. That’s why taking part in the survey or coming along to one of our sessions to talk to us is so important.”

Tamworth Borough Council has a history of working with the other five district councils and county council for many years on various projects, or sharing functions, to help deliver more efficient services for residents and businesses.

A full business case must be submitted to government for consideration in November.

More information on Local Government Reorganisation can be found on Tamworth Borough Council’s website at: www.tamworth.gov.uk/lgr, and you can take part in the survey via https://online1.snapsurveys.com/shapingstaffordshire  which will run until Monday 1 September 2025.

Other councils across Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent are also expected to put forward proposals for new authorities.
