Tamworth Borough Council invites you to get hands-on at 'Forge and Clay' event

Tamworth Borough Council are thrilled to announce an exciting opportunity for residents and visitors to experience traditional crafts at an upcoming ‘Forge and Clay’ event. On Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 March 2025, at the historic Tamworth Castle Stables, this special event features two FREE engaging, hands-on workshops – a blacksmithing session for adults and a clay workshop for children.

For the adult sessions, step into the world of traditional blacksmithing and forge your own unique creation in this immersive, hands-on experience. Under the expert guidance of master blacksmiths Richard from @reforgedblacksmiths and Matt from @sculptureshack, participants will learn the ancient craft of metalwork and take home a handmade item of their choice.

Workshop details:
•  Location: Outside the Castle Stables, The Holloway, Tamworth
•  Age requirement: 18+ only
•  Duration: Approximately 30 minutes per session
•  Dress code: This is an outdoor workshop - please dress appropriately for the weather.
•  What you’ll make: Choose to forge a hook, bottle opener, or key ring.
•  Booking information: Pre-booking required (one booking per person).
•  Entry: Free workshop participation does not include entry to Tamworth Castle.
•  Expert tuition: One-on-one instruction from experienced blacksmiths.
•  Safety guidelines: All participants must read and sign a risk assessment before taking part.
•  Protective gear: Eye protection and a fire-resistant welding jacket will be provided.

For the children’s workshops, young artists can unleash their creativity in a fun and interactive clay workshop, where they will craft their very own Saxon-inspired coil pot using air-dry clay. Skilled potters Emma, Pixie, and Jo will be on hand to guide children through the process, helping them personalise their pots with authentic Saxon-style stamps.

Workshop details:  
•  Location: Outside the Castle Stables, The Holloway, Tamworth
•  Guided by experts: Hands-on support and creative tips from experienced potters.
•  Booking: Reserve tickets for children only – accompanying adults do not need a ticket.
•  Supervision: Children must be accompanied by an adult (maximum two adults per child due to space limitations).
•  Space limitations: Accompanying adults will be required to stand during the session.
•  Clothing: Wear clothes that can get a little messy.
•  Entry: Free workshop participation does not include entry to Tamworth Castle.

These activities are part of a wider heritage crafts project funded from the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
