Tamworth Borough Council’s ambitious town centre regeneration project continues with work to install new paving, linking areas around the Town Hall and the new Castle Gateway to create an open public realm space.

As part of the Future High Street Fund town centre regeneration programme, new paving already runs from St Editha’s Square through Middle Entry. The next stage will see the paving continue outside the new Town Hall Place buildings and the Town Hall.

Working to keep disruption to a minimum, walkways will be narrower, and all shops remain very much open throughout. Work is expected to take four to five weeks to complete with work to the new Castle Gateway expected to complete mid-September.

Once the new bridge into the Castle Grounds gateway area is finished, the paving will be extended to connect all projects together, around the Town Hall and surrounding areas, with an expected completion date of mid-November.

This work forms part of Tamworth Borough Council’s ambitious £21million regeneration plan to transform the town centre into the busy, thriving heart of the community. Three projects are already complete; three others are well underway and expected to complete this year.

Once complete the regeneration programme deliver:

  • A new Enterprise Centre in the original 19th Century former Co-operative building on Colehill. (Completed).
  • A wider footbridge into the castle grounds, to enhance the significance of the grade 1 listed castle, and the existing character and appearance of the conservation area.
  • Redevelopment replicating the original Georgian style of the former Peel Café, bringing a building back into active use. (Now complete, and the new home to the Nationwide Building Society).
  • Refurbished and paved St Editha’s Square. (Completed).
  • Middle Entry renovations which will see some vacant units demolished to be replaced by a new flexible, multi-use building, for independent small businesses. (This is now called Town Hall Place and is expected to welcome new business tenants from September).
  • Public realm works that will link all the projects together.

Additionally, South Staffordshire College is progressing with building a new college facility replacing the demolished 1960s part of the Co-op building. Together both projects deliver a combined investment of over £40million in Tamworth town centre.

Carol Dean, leader of Tamworth Borough Council, said: “It’s exciting to see more of our town centre projects coming together, we can really see how much this work is already transforming our town into a more vibrant and welcoming place.

“With three regeneration projects now complete and others just weeks away from finishing, this next stage of work will really start to link everything together and deliver us a beautiful and inviting, public realm open space.

“We know this work has caused disruption and we thank businesses, residents and visitors for their patience while we make these important improvements.

“Throughout all work, the town and market are open, and I’d urge everyone to continue to support our local businesses and shop, socialise and visit the town centre.”
